Environment

The Gateway Energy Centre will be one of the most efficient and environmentally advanced power stations in the world. Clean burning natural gas will be the fuel for the new plant and modern equipment will be employed to control emissions. The station will produce approximately 50% less carbon dioxide than a conventional coal station with around 75% less oxides of nitrogen and virtually no sulphur dioxide.

Gas-fired power stations emit no odours from their processes and an air cooled condenser will minimise water use and discharge. The plant will be designed to be very quiet. All aspects of the environmental performance will be closely monitored not only by InterGen, but also by the relevant authorities, such as the Environment Agency, throughout the lifetime of the energy centre.
