Gas and Climate Change

The Government believes that renewable sources of energy (wind, solar, tidal, wave and biomass) could provide up to 30% of our electricity needs by 2020. This still leaves 70% to be sourced from more conventional fuel such as gas, coal and nuclear power.

Gas is the cleanest way to generate electricity from fossil fuels – it is much cleaner than coal, with approximately 50% fewer carbon dioxide emissions and is 50% more efficient. In addition, there is no ash or dust emitted from gas-fired plants.
